Qualifications | Requirements for Summer 2010

For a school to be eligible to send applicants to be considered for the Summer Institute for the Gifted, each school participating must:

  • Adopt procedures to implement the Accelerated Reader program according to the best practices as established by Renaissance Learning.
  • 20 -30 Minute per day Sustained Silent Reading
  • Individual student Goals set each grading period by appropriate teachers
  • Student Reading logs kept by students and initialed by teachers
  • Status of the class taken each day during Sustained Silent Reading
  • Clear record that the procedures are being implemented correctly
  • Diagnostic Reports will be printed for each grading period
  • Goal history reports will be printed
  • Individual student reading logs and records will be assessed
  • Appropriate books within the students ZPD No Short Stories
  • The school of attendance must be working toward model school using the best practices as designed by Renaissance Learning.

Students will have a portfolio including the following:

  • Star Scores provide the committee with a potential list of SIG Students
  • 95th Percentile ranking on the December/January Star Reading Test or
  • 95th Percentile ranking on the December/January Star Math Test
  • If a student qualifies with 95 Percentile Ranking in math, they must also be in the 95th Percentile Ranking in Reading.

AR Participation:

  • Consideration of student’s participation in AR and SIG from previous school year
  • Participation in Present year.
  • Participation is defined as
  • Point goals met (Individual Goals are set according to Renaissance Learning goal setting chart)
  • Average of 90% correct on AR quizzes for the entire 2009-2010 school year
  • Letter of Recommendation by Principal (Required and turned in on time)
  • Letter of acceptance by the Parents (Required and turned in on time)
  • Good Conduct Record (Required)
  • No Suspensions
  • Any student causing a problem at SIG forfeits any future participation

Students who qualified in the Star Reading and or Star Math will be ranked according to the following point system. The top 35 students will be selected along with 4 alternates. The alternates will participate if the awarded decline or drop out.

Point System for selection of 40 students to attend SIG

  • Up to 45 Points for School Participation in AR
  • 10 points for Goals Set correctly each grading period by each English/Reading teacher
  • 5 points for Established reading time
  • 5 points for Evidence of monitoring of students
  • 10 Points for a school that has achieved model school status
  • 15 Points for a school that has achieved master school status
  • Up to 55 Points for Student Participation in AR
  • 35 points for Average % correct at 90 or above for each grading period for the year. Students are required to read within their zpd.
  • 15 points for Point goal achieved for each grading period
  • 10 points for evidence of a reading log

A writing sample will be required if needed to break a tie, using the state LEAP/or GEE writing rubric. Writing prompts will be provided for each student and they will complete writing assignment in a Monroe City School library supervised by the Carmel Hill Fund Project Director or Carmel Hill Fund Project Facilitator.

If a student attends SIG, he must attend a Monroe City School the following year or they will be asked to refund the money to the Carmel Hill Fund.

If a student attends SIG and leaves before the end of the SIG term, he/she forfeits the right to ever attend again.

Age Limit Requirement Any student who skips a grade will not be considered until that student is age appropriate. Each student will be considered individually.

If any required information is not turned in by the designated date, the student will be automatically moved to the alternate list.
